Artist Statement

My work focuses on the study of opposition. More precisely, I am intrigued by both the tensions and synergy that exist between the two extremes. My current work uses both religious and psychological themes to explore this study further. My art is highly influenced by my experiences living in various cultures where I have either gathered and/or created my own language of symbology.

I love symbolism. From the beginning of my art career, I have employed the use of symbols whether they took their form in color, shape or through imagery. Symbols have the power to convey both universal and personal meaning. As an artist, I feel I must create works that have deep meaning for myself and can be appreciated by the viewer. I believe art can be one of the most powerful tools to transmit truth deeply and purely to a viewer which can stimulate change and growth.

I enjoy working in black and white. I feel these colors invite the viewer to focus more on the symbolism of the piece. The art is completed using the monochromatic pointillist method. There are a few reasons for this. First, the dots allow for the subtle gradations my work has become so well-known for. Second, the dots create a beautiful texture that invites the viewer to take a closer look at the piece. By so doing, the piece envelopes the viewer enabling them to enjoy an intimate experience. Third, each artwork shows evidence that one dot is insignificant, but many can create a masterpiece. I am like one of my pieces. My small actions, I hope, will someday amount to something great.

My Story

I grew up in a suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio. With 6 siblings and an amusement park not far away, I couldn’t claim ever to be bored. And I never was. But it wasn’t only because of days spent riding on roller coasters or because of family time. I spent many days making art. My dad was a financial advisor and my mom was everything we kids needed her to be. Before kids though, she enjoyed sewing and craft painting. She had boxes of scraps and paints that I always got into. I made everything that came into my head. My parents always applauded me for my art and encouraged me to continue.

Then one day my dad asked me to help create some art that would be displayed as part of a work presentation he needed to give. This gave me the public recognition and validation I needed. Forever after my dad always joked that he used to be an artist but when I was born he passed all his talent on to me!

Deciding what I wanted to be when I grew up was easy for me. I don’t remember ever having another dream besides that of becoming an artist (except in preschool when I was asked and my reply was that I wanted to be a witch! It must have been around Halloween). I think my dream to become an artist began early with the love, encouragement and confidence that my parents continually gave me that helped me stay on this path.

Now I am married with 4 children. Despite the demands of being a mother, my spouse continues to give me the support and encouragement I need.

My desire is to make art that brings people joy. When people tell me how my art has helped them or changed them in some way I too feel joy.
